The Low-Energy Declutter: 5 Gentle Wins to Lighten Your Home

There’s a specific kind of stillness that settles in by late January. The holiday decorations are tucked away, the initial burst of New Year energy has often started to dip, and the grey afternoon light makes the sofa feel much more inviting than diving into a decluttering project. While the rest of the world might be shouting about massive transformations and total life resets, we often need reminding that, sometimes, the kindest thing you can do for yourself is to start small.

If your energy levels currently feel more aligned with a cosy blanket than sorting an overflowing cupboard, you’re in exactly the right place. You don’t need a weekend-long overhaul to feel the benefits of a calmer home. Today, we’re focusing on gentle wins: tiny, five-minute tasks that respect your energy while still clearing the path for a more peaceful space. Let’s look at how we can bring a little lightness back to your home, one small space at a time.

1. The Daily Routine Drawer

Instead of tackling the whole kitchen or bathroom, focus only on the one drawer you open every single morning. Whether it’s your cutlery tray or your make-up drawer, clearing out the crumbs, the broken hair bands or the make-up you no longer wear, makes your morning routine feel instantly smoother. Focus on how much better it feels to reach for a spoon or a brush without having to dig through noise.

2. The Expiration Date Audit

Head to the medicine cabinet or your spice rack. Don't worry about organising the bottles; simply look for anything that is past its ‘best before’ date. Removing expired painkillers, old vitamins or that jar of spice from years ago is a purely logical task that requires no emotional energy but frees up physical space immediately.

3. The Surface Sweep

Pick one flat surface that has become a magnet for clutter. Maybe it’s the coffee table, a kitchen counter or the sideboard in the hallway. Set a timer for five minutes and clear only that one surface. Put things back in their ‘homes’ as soon after as possible or place them in a ‘things to do’ basket for later. Celebrate the clear surfaces that give your eyes, and your brain, a place to rest, free from the mental 'to-do' list of a cluttered space.

A calm, cosy, uncluttered living room with comfy cushions on the sofa and a clear coffee table. A place to relax and unwind.
A calm, uncluttered space to relax gives your brain a break from a visual to-do list created by the clutter.

4. The Mug-Shot

Most of us have a kitchen cupboard overflowing with mugs, many of which we never use. Open the cupboard and pull out two or three that are chipped, have handles that are uncomfortable to hold, or just don't bring you joy. Put them in a bag for donation. This helps the mugs you actually love have more room to breathe, making your next cup of tea feel like a little luxury.

5. The Digital Tidy-Up

This is the ultimate low-energy task because you can do it while sitting on the sofa. Open your phone and delete five apps you haven't opened in six months, or unsubscribe from three retail newsletters that keep tempting you to spend. This isn't just about storage space, it’s about reducing the digital noise that competes for your attention every time you pick up your phone.

When you finish one of these tasks, take a moment to notice how the space feels. It’s not about perfection, it’s about the fact that you showed up for yourself today, even in a small way. That’s enough. However, sometimes doing anything at all can feel a bit heavy, so here are two gentle ways to help you get started and make the process feel less like a chore.

Try ‘Body Doubling’

If the thought of decluttering alone feels heavy or isolating, try a technique called Body Doubling. Traditionally used to help with focus, it simply means having someone else present while you work. The beauty of a low-energy declutter is that your partner doesn't even need to be in the house!

The Virtual Tea Date: Call a friend or family member on speakerphone. Tell them, ‘I’m just going to tidy this one drawer while we chat.’ The conversation keeps your ‘thinking brain’ busy, allowing your ‘doing brain’ to finish the task without over-analysing every item.

The Podcast Companion: If you aren't up for a chat, put on a familiar podcast or an audiobook. Choose something light and comforting, like a favourite fiction series or a gentle comedy. It transforms the task from a chore into a background activity while you enjoy a story.

Celebrate the Done (No matter how small)

We often fall into the trap of thinking that if we didn't clear the whole room, it doesn't count. But if we celebrate the effort, not just the outcome, then we are more likely to keep going and achieve more in the long run.

Five minutes of decluttering is five minutes of active care you have given to your future self. When you finish your tiny task (even if it was just deleting three old emails or tossing out one broken pen) take a literal second to pause. Look at the space you cleared, take a deep breath, and acknowledge that you did something helpful for your environment.

By celebrating what you have done, you’re training your brain to see organising as a positive act of self-care rather than a punishing standard you have to meet. You aren't just tidying; you are reclaiming your peace, one small win at a time.

If you find your inner critic whispering that you 'should' be doing more, try replacing that thought with this gentle reminder:

‘I am allowed to move at my own pace. Slow progress is still progress.’

Remember: your home is there to hold you, not to haunt you. Be as patient with your space as you would be with a dear friend. You’re doing a wonderful job.

Sometimes, the smallest step is the hardest to take alone. If these five-minute wins feel like a good start but the bigger picture still feels a bit overwhelming, I’d love to help. My decluttering sessions are designed to be a gentle, non-judgmental partnership where we go at your pace. No pressure, no shame, just progress.
